Spectroscopic instruments and techniques
The spectra of basalts were collected using the ASD FieldSpec® 3 spectrometer in the spectral range of 0.35-2.5 μm, with 3 nm spectral resolution in the visible range and 10 nm in the infrared (instrument of Laboratoire de Planétologie et Géodynamique Nantes).
The spectra of tholins were collected using a Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer (Nicolet, model NEXUS 670) configured with a drift reflectance accessory (Harrick, model Praying Mantis DRP) mounted inside the instrument compartment (instrument of NASA Ames Research Center).
Systems and cells
The tholin experiments were conducted in the Andromeda chamber (Wasiak et al. 2013) at the Keck Laboratory of the Arkansas Center for Space and Planetary Sciences.
